Introduction
In a turbulent era, scholar Jo Shik, known as Nammyung, chose truth over power. Rejecting government office, he lived in seclusion and mentored disciples, yet with his memorial “Eulmyo Sajoekso” he boldly denounced the injustices of his time. His spirit lived on through his students, resounding as a great chorus of victory in the Imjin War. The original opera The Recluse Nammyung portrays the convictions of a man who held fast to principle, delivering a resonance that poses profound questions for us today.
