Introduction
asses.masses is a participatory performance, lasting seven and a half hours, in which the audience plays collectively to bring the narrative to completion. On a stage that evokes an intersection between Animal Farm, Pokémon, and Final Fantasy, spectators join the journey of a herd of donkeys battling machines to reclaim their jobs. The work shifts between 2D and 3D game genres, unfolding through witty dialogue and episodic scenes. Structured in ten chapters with four intermissions, during which snacks and meals are served, the theatre transforms into both a vast gaming arena and a forum for debate. Satirical and political in tone, the piece poses the question: “Does work define us, or does play set us free?
